That Maddow-Paul set-to on MSNBC was tragic-comic. As CounterPunch co-editor Jeffrey St Clair remarked, "Maddow and Paul agree on probably 90 per cent of the BIG issues confronting us, from ending the drug and Afghan war, to ending bail outs & aid to Israel. But because of their own peculiar prejudices, his doctrinaire libertarian, hers PC progressive, neither of them can talk about anything other than a non-issue such as the Civil Rights Act of 19 -- SIXTY-FOUR. It's like a Dadaist play."

You think the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is going to come up for review in the U.S. Senate?
Whether it comes up or not, his attitude toward the Civil Rights Act has an absolute effect on things he WILL be voting about every day. If he is really saying that the federal government can't tell a private business what to do, then how about these questions?
For instance: Can the federal government set the private sector's minimum wage? Can it tell private businesses not to hire illegal immigrants? Can it tell oil companies what safety systems to build into an offshore drilling platform? Can it tell toy companies to test for lead? Can it tell liquor stores not to sell to minors? These are the sort of questions that Paul needs to be asked now, because the issue is not "area politician believes kooky but harmless thing." It's "area politician espouses extremist philosophy on issue he will be voting on constantly."

For starters, one can compare Ron Paul's positions, and most times the answers are 'no'.
Counterpunch does make a good point that politicians like them are rare...and made the point of how their philosophy would also include how they're set against the patriot act, that most Republicans supported, and now the Obama admin running with, well whatever's left of it from the courts...

Alexander Cockburn has a talent for shining a light on the blind spots that liberals suffer from. He doesn't give Rand Paul a pass for being a nut, but he also points out that Rand Paul's Democratic opponent isn't exactly going to be an asset for progressive causes.
